Smart Indoor Environmental Monitoring: Detect Air Quality, Humidity, and Moisture Before Problems Begin
Indoor environments can change quickly without anyone noticing. Dust levels may rise within minutes, humidity can spike during weather changes, and hidden moisture can create mold long before it becomes visible. These issues affect health, damage property, and reduce comfort in homes, offices, and construction sites. Without proper monitoring, these changes remain invisible until they become serious—poor air quality, moisture buildup, and unstable indoor conditions often go unnoticed until the problem becomes expensive or unsafe. That’s why reliable environmental monitoring has become essential wherever people live or work.
To address these challenges, our solution uses a simple setup consisting of a gateway and multiple wireless nodes, all built around the ESP32-WROOM-32UE microcontroller. This platform was chosen for its reliability, low power consumption, and excellent wireless capabilities—ideal for temporary installations that move from site to site. Each device includes a high-precision Piera IPS 7100 particle counter to measure air quality, a Sensirion SHT40 sensor for temperature and humidity, and support for receiving data from up to twenty-five Protimeter BLE moisture sensors. This allows the system to track dust levels, comfort conditions, and moisture risks across multiple rooms at the same time. Sensor readings are taken every fifteen seconds and uploaded to the cloud every five minutes to save cellular bandwidth. Because Wi-Fi is often unavailable in temporary or residential environments, the gateway uses a cellular module for cloud communication, while connectivity between devices can be improved using long-range technologies like LoRa instead of Bluetooth mesh, ensuring stronger performance inside homes and commercial buildings.
All readings are uploaded securely to AWS and displayed on a simple website where users can log in to view only their own data. Technicians can easily start new installations using a small app to enter the location and details, while the devices themselves show important information on an LCD screen with simple indicators for power, connection, and data status. The result is a practical and reliable way for users—whether homeowners, inspectors, or facility managers—to stay aware of indoor conditions and take action before small issues turn into major problems.
Environmental monitoring is no longer optional. With the right sensors, long-range communication, and cloud visibility, people can prevent health risks, protect property, and maintain healthier indoor spaces. If you’re preparing to move your monitoring device from prototype to production, now is the perfect time to refine the hardware and improve wireless performance.
