Industry 4.0 (also known as Industrial IoT) is the hot topic in the field of manufacturing industry today and the initiative is aiming to become the corner-stone of the modern automation sector in the near future.
With IIoT reaching its full potential, we can literally craft a smart factory which comprises the applications of Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing merged with cyber-physical systems. These cyber-physical systems are benefited from the services provided by IoT technology, the Internet of Services through which the systems mingle with each other, implicitly creating a clone of the physical world. This cloning is governed by pre-defined de-centralized decisions which offer real time communication with people by monitoring physical processes that are being involved in an elementary manufacturing unit.
In the present scenario the effective implementation of IoT in the industrial sector is still a fairytale. This digital evolution in the industrial area has some serious hurdles to tackle. The major challenges under consideration are:
- Data handling and security issues, as hacking poses a major threat.
- Easy integration of the entire process.
- Reliability and stability of successful physical-cyber communication among the IIoT systems.
- The un-employment factor with the launch of new technology.
- Tackling critical technical issues which results in exorbitant manufacturing operations.
- Shortage and lack of skilled labors in designing and operating these automated systems push back the stakeholders to invest heavily in new technologies
Although there are some potential risks, the merits posed by IIoT outweigh the risk factor. One such advantage is that under hazardous situations, the health and safety issues of human labor can be substantially increased with the introduction of IIoT. Also, the machine monitoring associated with this technology could generate much more effective and stable output ensuring increased revenues and profits to the business.
Thus, in the nick of time we can hope that the advancement of IIoT technology will have a tremendous impact in the global industry providing better operational excellence with much more secure connectivity.
