People are always in look out for smart energy saving solutions that would help them reduce wastage of electricity and thereby reducing their monthly bills by a huge chunk. Building automation systems is a hot topic right now and more and more people are becoming interested in automating lot of their day to day works.  Our team has been researching on this topic for a while now and have created a few prototypes like the “smart meter” that would help in conserving energy for a common consumer.

The Smart Meter Project

Out of the various prototypes that we have created, the most interesting of all was the concept of smart meter. I have heard people complain about towering electricity bills that the meter reader gives them; often people are less aware of the daily electricity usage in their homes. Some appliances or devices will consume more electricity contrary to our expectations or sometimes there may be a leak somewhere which will result in increasing the units consumed.

About smart meter

Smart meter basically contains a sensor unit which would be placed inside the meter casing and a wireless display unit that can be placed anywhere in your home.  The sensor unit basically consist of light sensor that would detect the blink of the LED in the meter and then do the necessary math and transmits data over a P2P communication channel. The display unit then picks up these data and show it in an LCD screen. It also informs the user about the average energy usage and peak electricity consumption. The energy from different energy grids can be efficiently managed through this system.
