One thing that is sure about technology is that it changes rapidly, take IoT for example. Prospective customers are very apprehensive towards choosing an IoT platform that might become obsolete or extremely difficult to customize in the long run. Instead they want to run their projects on more reputed IoT based platforms that would not only be stable but scalable as well. There are hundreds of complex and unique protocols being written and published for IoT alone. Since IoT systems would be in a distributed environment, IoT gateways becomes that more important to stabilize, monitor and regulate the environment. IoT gateways can be called as a mediator layer between the end devices and the cloud. In one of our earlier blogs, we had mentioned about development of IoT gateways in detail.
Popular IoT Gateways
Many reputed IT companies are coming up with customized gateway solutions and today we take two of the most famous of such gateways, Microsoft’s Azure IoT gateway and Intel’s IoT gateway.
Intel IoT Gateway
According to Intel, Intel IoT gateway offers their customers to enable the connectivity of engineering devices and other structures to the IoT. The whole idea is the result of collaboration between Wind River and McAfee with Intel. The main aim of the gateway is to connect legacy and latest systems with the cloud thus ensuring a unified and integrated data flow between the cloud and end devices. Innovative IoT gateways such as Intel’s help in taking those crucial business decisions by converting the data coming from the end devices to valued and legal understandings. The Intel team has developed a developer kit for projects constructed using Intel IoT gateway. The hardware choices include Intel NUC (DE3815TYKHE), Dell Wyse* 3290 Gateway or Gigabyte GB-BXBT-3825. The Intel IoT Gateway Software Suite is a Wind River Linux OS. Intel assures that the real time data collected from end devices would be processed and filtered by the gateway to give meaningful insights to improve the business process. Since McAfee is involved in the collaboration, their embedded control technology ensures a secured data flow from the end devices to the cloud. Other main features promoted by Intel includes scalability according to gateway performance requirements and manageability for remote upgrades and a faster, flexible deployment process.
Azure IoT Gateway
Microsoft is giving predominant importance to the Azure platform. They are promoting the platform as an assortment of assimilated cloud services. Azure has ventured into new foray like analytics, computing and networking. Azure IoT gateway was built to connect the legacy devices to the cloud. The idea is to build logic for the edge devices as part of constructing hybrid solutions. Azure has rolled out an SDK called Azure IoT gateway SDK to make the application development process much simpler. IoT projects can be built upon any open source framework with the choice of extension of SDK in any language: Python, Java, Node.JS, C and C # for the implementation of specific logic depending upon the situation. IoT hub is a latest entrant in the Microsoft’s Azure arsenal; it is basically a service that allows bi-directional communication between the devices and business engine in the cloud. AWS IoT allows the usage of standard protocols like HTTP and AMQP. Azure IoT gateway is used to provide necessary protocol adaptation from any other protocol like MQTT to AMQP. Transport Layer Security is used for establishing connection between IoT devices and the IoT hub. Azure IoT gateway can be used to develop on-site custom calculation when traditional solutions hardly work.
