Internet of Things (IoT) solution development consists of the hardware, the software and the connectivity. To build a reliable, secure and scalable IoT device is no simple task. Many factors need to be taken into consideration while developing solutions involving connected devices. It is integral to choose the sensors, controllers and communication networks best suited for each specific application.

WeMakeIoT has been using controllers like Raspberry Pi, Arduino, STM and ESP to build prototypes for our clients. While many IoT platforms facilitate solution development, none are as easy to develop as Particle.

Particle is a fully-integrated IoT platform that offers everything you need to build an IoT device. They have development boards with microcontrollers that connect your devices to the internet in minutes; development tools to help program the firmware; and Particle device cloud to give you control over all your devices. All of Particle’s controllers support Over-The-Air firmware updates that allow us to remotely update the code on an embedded device.

We have developed remote tracking solutions using Particle Electron and fixed asset solutions with Particle Photon. We have recently started using their 3rd generation of controllers; Argon, Boron, and Xenon to solve our clients’ requirements. These controllers allow mesh networks for two way communication between IoT connected devices and hence expand the range for connectivity in solutions.

Our client, an Ornithologist wanted us to develop a solution to track and study the flight patterns of migratory birds. The data coming from a GPS module needed to be decoded, filtered and sent to the cloud. We programmed a particle electron 2G module to send the GPS data to the cloud when network connectivity is available and store the data to be sent later in the absence of connectivity.

Another client owned several Segway scooters and wanted to set up a Segway rental management system. We developed a solution using Particle that allows the client to lock and unlock the Segways from a remote location. This enables the user to control the Segway by giving commands such as start/stop, lock and switching on the LED lights.

WeMakeIoT has been leveraging the use of Particle for our solutions. The ease of IoT product development provided by the Particle IoT Platform ensures that our embedded engineers can quickly prototype and seamless roll out new versions of the device firmware, speeding up innovation cycles.
