Focus on water conservation

Water as it was, is and always will be the principal ingredient in farming, no matter how much technologies come and go. Conservation of water has been in every farmer’s agenda for ages, every single farmer would go an extra mile for the optimum usage of water for farming. In this article we would look deep into how smart farm solutions like Smart Farm IoT platform helps in achieving the same.

Working of smart farming solutions

Smart farming solutions helps in achieving optimal usage of water thanks to the various sensors and actuator units deployed across the farm. The sensor picks up vital data such as soil moisture, temperature, pH level etc. and sends it across to the user via communication gateways. The gateways can also trigger the actuator units like solenoid valve or ambient light based on these data.

Few of the areas where smart farm solutions can be of help
  • Drip irrigation: One of the current trending irrigation methodologies is drip irrigation; Drip irrigation basically ensures that water drips down slowly either onto the soil surface or directly onto the root zone. Here we can control the level of dripping by the means of various valves controlled remotely.
  • Maintaining the pH Level:  Adequate supply of fertilizers and minerals to the plants are very important as less or more can do a lot of harm for the crops. pH sensors help in notifying about the lack of minerals in the farm and the farmers can take necessary actions based on the readings. Minerals and boosters can be mixed into the water and supplied to the plants to maintain that suitable pH level. The mixers would ensure that optimum amount of fertilizers are added to the water to achieve the best yield possible.
  • Sustaining soil moisture: Most of the crops would always need a greater content of soil moisture in order to grow fast. Open farms can get pretty dry in summer and sometimes crops don’t get enough water to sustain. Soil moisture sensors deployed across the farm can pick up these warning signs and immediately trigger the water supply through the water pump.
  • Preventing overflow: Sensors can be deployed in the water tank so that a warning signal is sent the moment water overflows the threshold limit. This helps in a lot of water savings as the overflow is prevented.

We can provide hundreds of examples where smart farm solutions can help in conserving water. If you are a farmer not only you can achieve a good yield by optimal usage of water, the satisfaction of wasting less water is a major boon. We all want to do something to make this world a better place to live in.
